Acute Stroke: Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis

The National Stroke Association estimates that 87% of all strokes are related to ischemia. Ischemic strokes are the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. When it comes to stroke care, prevention is key. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a condition that increases the risk of stroke. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a preventable condition that includes two major diagnoses: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Patients hospitalized with a stroke diagnosis or trans-ischemic attack (TIA) are at increased risk of a VTE event. Pharmacological agents that slow or prevent clot development are often part of the prevention plan.

The goal of this course is to review nursing professionals and physicians in the acute care setting with information about anticoagulation agents used in the prevention of venous thromboembolism
