This is a free training course intended for service providers in North Carolina public service agencies, including: Local Management Entity/Managed Care Organizations (LME/MCOs), vocational rehabilitation or independent living offices, educators, case managers, substance abuse or mental health professionals, social security or social services professionals, advocacy or support agencies, or anyone else who serves people with brain injury.
Course Objectives:
1. To ensure service providers understand the range of outcomes of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the implications for assessment and care-planning
2. To improve the ability of service providers to identify and deliver appropriate services for persons with TBI - including coordination across service agencies when appropriate
3. To learn what TBI is and how the brain is affected by different types of injuries, realize the significance of TBI in North Carolina, and understand the possible long-term impacts to the individual and family as a result of TBI
4. To learn how to interact effectively with all people with TBI and how you can recognize issues that may arise due to a TBI and strategies to handle them in the most appropriate manner
5. To learn how to administer and score a TBI screening tool and know when to make a referral for further assessment
6. To learn what services are offered by public agencies that might be appropriate for persons with TBI and how to access them and realize the importance of networking with other agencies to provide the most appropriate and cost effective services for persons with TBI.

Sheri W. Bartel, M.Ed., CBIST
Sheri Bartel has worked in the brain injury rehabilitation field for over 20 years. In recent years, she worked as the program coordinator and Principal Investigator for TBI Project STAR at Carolinas Rehabilitation and as the Senior Research Technician for two separate brain injury research studies. Sheri spent 4 years developing and implementing brain injury training programs and materials for professionals in North Carolina from 2005-2009, including law enforcement personnel. She has conducted trainings for professionals on a regular basis over the past 20 years, including teachers, LME staff, and providers and other professionals working with individuals with brain injuries. Sheri has extensive experience with brain injury related support and focus groups and maintains a strong passion for listening to families and building opportunities for recovery, strength, and joy.

Lauren obtained dual Bachelor's degrees from Virginia Tech in Biological Sciences & Psychology. She then pursued her Master's degree in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She has worked in the hospital and community settings with special populations including acquired/traumatic brain, burn, and spinal cord injuries to name a few. She currently works at the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina as Central Resource & State Training Coordinator. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and Brain Injury Specialist.
